Senate wants Kilili to join State of the Commonwealth Address

The Senate unanimously adopted Joint Resolution 17-01 yesterday urging Sablan to report on federal matters concerning the CNMI.

Senate Floor Leader Peter P. Reyes, R-Saipan, who introduced the resolution told his colleagues that “we should strongly urge the U.S. delegate to report to people who voted for him.”

Although the federalization law, which created the delegate seat, does not require him to report to the people of the CNMI, the congressman has a responsibility to inform the people and the commonwealth government about the efforts of his office in pushing for the interest of the islands, the resolution stated.

It noted that the delegate has publicly stated that his office belongs to the people of the CNMI “so it is important that he report to its people.”

In the past, the Washington representative was required to submit a written annual report and appear before the Legislature during the joint session for the governor’s State of the Commonwealth Address.

The CNMI Constitution mandates the governor to report annually to the people and the Legislature regarding the affairs of the commonwealth.
