Joeten-Kiyu library closes next week for system upgrade

The library’s Information Technology Center coordinator Roy Rechebei told the Variety yesterday that they have to shut down library operations to upgrade their computer data base system so this can match the high standards of other library systems across the country.

Rechebei said currently, the data base system of the library is slow, affecting the checking in and out of books, the cataloguing system and everything else.

He said  the server upgrading procedure will be done through remote access by an Australian-based company.

“We have to close the library because we cannot allow interruptions in our computers during the upgrading process, but when we resume operation our patrons can expect better and improved services,” he added.

Rechebei said the upgrade will also improve the remote services of the mobile library which currently operates on an independent system.

“The mobile library will then be synchronized with the data base center in the main library so that whatever transactions the mobile library will do, the main data center will be updated daily,” he said.

Computer classes at the library’s Information Technology Center will be temporarily suspended for the week but after the upgrading process, Rechebei said the schedule will return to normal.

He said this will be the third time for the library to upgrade its data base system, with the most recent one conducted eight years ago.

“We have to keep on upgrading if we are to meet up with the standards and serve our patrons better,” he said.

Library patrons are encouraged to conduct their transactions — such as borrowing or returning books, DVDs and other materials from the library — starting today until Saturday. Normal operations will resume on Aug. 31.
