THE poolside at the Pacific Islands Club Saipan was full of energy on Saturday, as the Tsunami Cup held its second meet, featuring over 30 swimmers competing for the top spot with the top three in each division earning medals.
Following a championship meet format, young swimmers competed in a preliminary round, with the top three advancing to the A-Final, while the rest contended in the B-Final for consolation honors.
Claiming gold in the 8U division was Tsunami Club’s Lucy Shin, who led the 50 Fly Mixed A-Final with a time of 42.56 followed by Tsunami’s Angelo Pepito (53.52) for silver, and Tsunami’s Xingyu Wang (55.41) for bronze.
In the 50 Fly Mixed B-Final, Tsunami’s Milana Sablan finished first with a time of 59.85 while Tsunami’s Aiden Velasco (1:01.58) settled for second place.
In the 9 & 10 Division, Saipan Swim Club’s Lauren Camacho led the 50 Fly Mixed A-Final with a gold-medal finish, clocking 39.71 followed by Tsunami’s Apollo Arriola (41.89) for silver and Tsunami’s Leo Li (42.34) for bronze.
In the 50 Fly 11 & 12 Mixed A-Final, Tsunami’s Sera Guerrero clocked 32.48 (not 35.48 as earlier stated) to clinch gold followed by Tsunami’s Gwen Retardo (34.30) for silver and Tsunami’s Eva Shin (39.80) for bronze.
During the breaks, a development heat was held for 10 beginner swimmers.
SSC’s PJ Seman and Tsunami’s Yo Suzuki, Clover Cha, and Luna Li topped their respective age groups by placing first in the 25m Mixed Freestyle and 25m Mixed Backstroke events.
The third meet of the Tsunami Cup is set for Saturday, June 21, and will feature the open division. It will also serve as a send-off event for CNMI swimmers heading to Palau to compete in the 2025 Pacific Mini Games.
The Tsunami Cup would like to acknowledge the Pacific Islands Club Saipan, the Northern Mariana Islands Swimming Federation, the parents of the volunteers, as well as senior swimmers Andrew Nunez, Julia Jinang, Isaiah Aleksenko, and Kean Pajarillaga for their help as officials.
