Recognition awards will also be presented to the youth of our community who were the winners and outstanding participants in the recent mock trial competitions and the Covenant Day debates.
A special invitation has been extended to the board of directors and staff of the NMI Council for the Humanities and to the CNMI Bar Association as sponsors and organizers of the mock trial and Covenant Day events as well as to the coaches, judges and financial supporters in the hope they will be able to attend and recognized for their contribution.
Law Week has been an annual observance since President Dwight Eisenhower established it in 1958 as a week of national dedication to the principle of government under law.
This year’s theme, “Law in the 21st Century — Enduring Traditions, Emerging Challenges,” provides an opportunity to understand and appreciate the emerging challenges that confront our world — and the law — in the 21st century, while reaffirming enduring legal traditions.
In proclaiming May to 7 as Law Week, Chief Justice Miguel S. Demapan calls upon the people of the CNMI to acknowledge the importance of their legal and judicial systems with appropriate ceremonies and activities, and to display the U.S. and commonwealth flags in support of this educational observance.
During the week judges and justices, law clerks, and members of the bar will be visiting community schools speaking to students.
At 8 a.m. on Friday, April 30, the AG’s Cup speakers’ tournament will be held in the Supreme Court courtroom. The public is invited to attend the revival of this CNMI-wide competition.
