inkling: Better give up

Up until about a decade ago, I would have argued that we should all strive to keep trying and trying and trying and not give up on the “the better life” that was foreseen- a life that we hope our children would live in.

I have changed my mind.I think it is time that we learn to give up and teach our children to do the same.We cannot afford the better life anymore – even if we had a trillion tries. The better life – the one which nearly everyone is striving to achieve – is a materialistic life, a life that is sustained with money.

Our best bet for the future is to give up.I know it would work. The people at the Ministry of Health have proven that in order for a person to live longer and healthier, he or she must give up a lot of things – including great tasting foods. One must give up a lot of weight. To lose weight, one must give up driving a car and resort to walking. In order to walk unhindered, one must give up wearing suits and heels. And the list goes on.

They say the economy is in dire straits and some things have been put on hold until the economy rebounds – no giving up yet.Further, there has been talk about raising taxes in order to boost the economy.I wonder where the better life went?

You and I really need to give up a lot if taxes are raised. The frequency of our visits to the stores would probably have to be cut in half, our contributions to NGO’s and other non-traditional fund raisers would diminish, we would have to resort to walking great distances to ballot booths to cast our votes, and we would most certainly give up our independence and turn to the government for aide.

If you think life prior to the present was better and a happy one, rest assured that it cannot be relived.A lot was given up for the life we live in today. You and I must plead with those of us who have the power – and a lot of reserve – to give up something for the better of this country. If everyone gives up something to give a little, our lives would be whole lot happier.

As Marcel Pagnol puts it: “The reason people find it so hard to be happy is that they always see the past better than it was, the present worse than it is, and the future less resolved than it will be.”Give up and be happy.
