New recreation area for manamko’

Aging Office program coordinator Walter Manglona said they planned to convert the court into a multi-purpose facility and plant trees around it.

The area, he added, is very ideal because its near the center.

Former Aging Office Director Howard Macanaras, before he passed away noted the potential use of the court, including the unused facility near the Garapan Head Start Center.

Macaranas, who was the block captain of the Neighborhood Watch Task Force in Chinatown and Garapan areas, helped crack down on graffiti, including those near the center.

Manglona said they will still allow the manamko’ to use the tennis court but for games that will not stress them out.

To avoid vandalism, he said, they will lock the gate of the court and maintain it.

“Safety is really our utmost concern,” he added.

He said they will install a portable basketball ring and other recreational paraphernalia for the the manamko’.

Manglona said their office is also working with the Division of Parks and Recreation for the use of other recreational parks for manamko’ events.

He said they are planning for form a soccer team that will compete with the manamko’ on Guam.

Currently, the outdoor activities of the Saipan manamko’ are golf and softball.
