Geckos fired up in boys volleyball opener

Saipan International School won five of their six sets to stun Marianas High and Saipan Southern High School in the opening day of the Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization’s 2011-12 Boys Volleyball League at the MHS gymnasium last Wednesday.

The Geckos first took out the MHS QTs, crushing them, 25-20, 25-15 in sets one and two, respectively.

MHS nearly claimed the first set on a five-point rally but failed to return a serve, handing SIS their winning point. The Dolphins fought back by set three and won, 15-8.

Unlike last season, teams this year must play all three sets regardless of winning the first two sets.

The Geckos then swept the Manta Rays in a following game, 25-14, 25-16, 15-7.

Head coach Mili Saiki confirmed four new players to Saipan International School’s roster this year.

The team currently includes: Andrew Nutting, Clay McCullough-Stearns, Taek Han Yoon, Rafael Jones, Angelo Jones, Christopher Lam, Andrew Johnson, Seoung Joon Lee, Je Yun Choi, Jehn Joyner, and Sei Higuchi.

In other matches, defending champion Kagman High School took its first loss after forfeiting a game to the MHS Awesome Fins.

Results between newcomer Grace Christian Academy and MHS’ third team — the KFC Dolphins — weren’t available during press time.

Volleyball games continue on Monday, October 17.

Scheduled match-ups include:

-KFC Dolphins vs. Awesome Fins (4 p.m.)

-KHS vs. GCA (4 p.m.)

-Awesome Fins vs. SIS (5 p.m.)

-SSHS vs. KFC Dolphins (5 p.m.)
