Robbery victim calls 911, follows driver of getaway vehicle

The driver identified the suspects to the police. He was not charged.

Superior Court Judge David A. Wiseman increased to $50,000 the original $20,000 bail order on Franklin Jesse Atalig, 20, and Michael Jordan Cabrera, 22.

Wiseman remanded the defendants to the custody of the Department of Corrections after their initial appearance and bail hearing yesterday.

They are being held on charges of disturbing the peace, assault and battery, and assault with a dangerous weapon, and robbery.

Assistant Attorney General Russel Lorfing represented the government.

Assistant Public Defender Douglas Hartig represents Atalig, while the court had yet to appoint Cabrera’s counsel.

Detective Catherine B. Pangelinan said Officer Stanley Patris was dispatched on Oct. 23, 2011 at about 1:19 a.m. to intercept two vehicles heading south on Beach Road in Chalan Piao.

The victim reported the robbery incident, and told the police his location as he was following the defendants’ getaway vehicle.

Officer Patris pulled over both vehicles by the former Classic Design Store on Martinez Road.

Police identified the driver as Shane Ada.

The victim approached the responding officer, and said the defendants robbed him at knifepoint at Town House Market. They ran and jumped into a silver Hyundai that was parked by the beachside of Aquarius Beach Tower.

The victim told police he could hear the defendants yelling at the driver “to hurry up.”

The getaway vehicle later dropped the two suspects at Ador Restaurant in San Antonio.

The victim continued following the get-away-vehicle toward Koblerville.

Officer Patris spotted and pulled over the two vehicles — the victim’s and the get-away car — after passing Mobil station in Koblerville.

Crime scene technician Jeffrey Bahillo recovered a seven-and-a half-inch knife, tucked between the front passenger seat and the center console.

The victim told police it was the same knife that was held to his chest during the robbery.

The victim said almost immediately after he parked his vehicle outside Town House Market in Chalan Kanoa, two individuals got into his car: one into the front passenger, the other in  the backseat.

The suspect behind choked the victim, while the suspect seated next to the victim, took out a knife and pointed it at the victim’s chest.

The suspects took the victim’s wallet that contained $107.

The next day, investigators talked to Ada at DPS and he admitted his participation in the robbery, police said.

Ada told police he planned the robbery with the defendants.

He pointed to the pictures of the two other defendants during a photo line-up.

It was not explained by police why Ada was not arrested and charged.
