USPS Guam not likely to be affected by cuts

The mail carrier is proposing to cut 220,000 jobs and reduce its organization by 300 offices by 2015.

According to Fred Workman, postmaster for Guam, the island may escape layoffs and a shutdown.

“I think Guam is self-sustaining, and the situation we’re facing here — the delivery situation on Guam, the mail profile — I don’t really see any significant changes that would impact Guam at this time,” Workman said.

However, Workman acknowledged that “anything can happen.”

“You never know what’s going to happen out there with the state of the post office.”

The USPS recently reported a $3.1 billion net loss in the second quarter of 2011. The agency is also facing insolvency and is expected to default on a $5.5 billion retiree health plan payment due Sept. 30, unless Congress takes action.
