Hart reports on NMC student services

NMC President Sharon Y. Hart said the dean of student services was notified that the stipend will end on Nov. 26.

She said NMC’s financial aid director, Daisy Propst, will be communicating with the Veteran Affairs Office to clarify the requirements for receiving the benefits and to explain the college’s “extenuating circumstances.”

“If exceptions/accommodations can be made, suggestions were made to create a distinct course that would run into December or service activities to demonstrate continued student engagement in learning during the month of December,” said Hart in her executive report.

She reported that on Aug. 17 a response from the Veteran Affairs Office indicated that non-credit activities will not be recognized as part of a student’s program of education.

The student’s housing allowance will be stopped on the adjusted semester end date in November.

Hart also reported to the board of trustees that nonresident students with a valid CNMI umbrella permit were allowed to register for courses.

She said these students were required to make full payment on tuition and fees by Aug. 26.

Hart said they also asked the U.S. Department of Education if the college’s shortened term would affect student eligibility for federal financial aid.

NMC was told to submit a written request for approval to reduce its academic year to 29 weeks of instruction, she added.
