Eileen Escudero Wisor, who was with a friend at the time, parked her white Toyota Tercel near the Sabalu Market area and swam in the lagoon.
She discovered the theft when they came back a few minutes later.
PO1 Randa John later arrived and interviewed her and her friend Robyn Wondrasek, a teacher at Marianas High School.
Wisor lost her backpack containing her clothes and toiletries, along with her cell phone, wallet and $400 digital camera.
Wisor said legal documents were also stolen.
She told the officer her car was not forcibly opened. The car key was still on one of the tires where she left it. The thief, she said, must have seen her putting the key on the tire before she left.
The thief opened one of the car’s back doors, took her things before putting the key back on the tire.
There were two other vehicles parked near the Tercel.
None of the people in the area, including Sabalu Marker vendors and customers, claimed to have noticed seeing anyone go near Wisor’s car.
Some vendors said there were many other vehicles parked in the area and unless they saw somebody forcibly opening a car window they would not know that a burglary was taking place.
On her Facebook page, Wisor posted: “If anyone comes across these items please let me know. Thank you!”
She added, “I was robbed from my vehicle while swimming the tanks. I was parked at the beach in front of the tanks and behind the fish market across the street from the multi-purpose room starting at 9:45 a.m. I swam to the farthest tank, rested for five minutes and swam back. In that time they took my big black handbag.”
The purse contained her “wallet, credit cards, checkbook, driver’s license, brand new Olympus Tough Camera, Android phone, 4 zip drives with my life on it (personal items and tons of backed up pictures), leather biz card holder — and leather planner with my life in it. They took my back pack (black with dive insignia on it) that had a change of clothes and all my favorite toiletry items that is so hard to find here.”
