Sen. Frank Q. Cruz, R-Tinian, in an interview yesterday said he supports the appointment of Mendiola.
Cruz said Mendiola is highly qualified based on his experience as Tinian mayor and lawmaker.
He knows what’s best for Tinian, Cruz said, referring to Mendiola.
Cruz said he appreciates the governor for considering Mendiola for “such an important board which is critical to Tinian’s tourism industry.”
He added, “We need to improve our tourism industry on Tinian because that is the only major industry left on the island.”
Cruz said they will conduct a public hearing as soon as possible and confirm Mendiola in their next session.
In a separate interview, Dela Cruz said Mendiola was his recommendation last year but the former mayor was not nominated.
So he decided to recommend Christian — only to learn that the governor had already nominated Mendiola.
“I’m okay with Mendiola; he was my original nominee,” Dela Cruz said.
