Saipan dog control program acquires vehicle

Yesterday, Mayor Donald G. Flores, presented the newly acquired vehicle and trailer that will be used for getting rid of stray dogs throughout the island.

Funding for the vehicle came from the $89,688 in technical assistance provided by the U.S. government.

He didn’t disclose the exact cost of the vehicle, but Flores said the rest of the federal money will be used to acquire 36 dog traps.

This week, dog tagging will be conducted at San Roque Fire Station. Next week it will be held at As Matuis basketball court until Nov. 23.

Flores said that after the village-to village dog tagging, they will continue to issue licenses at the mayor’s office in San Antonio.

The stray dog eradication will start by Dec. 23, he added.

Ray Lizama, the dog control program director, said 1,648 dogs have been registered since June.

Since 2010, the mayor’s office was able to retrieve 1,656 animal carcasses on public roads, he added.

They received a total of six reports about dog bites as of yesterday, he said.

Within this month, he said they will construct 10 kennels at the animal dog shelter in Lower Base.

The facility, he said, is not ready yet since the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. is still working on the sewer system and  power installation.

Lizama urged community members not to throw their garbage near the shelter.

He also expressed concern about dogs that were already tagged but are still allowed by their owners to roam free.

“We advise the owners to tie their pets, especially those near the school, church and tourist zones,” he said.
