Nonresidents to celebrate ‘solidarity’

Human Dignity Movement president Itos Feliciano said today’s event will start at 2 p.m. and end at 6 p.m. at the campsite of the nonresidents outside the USCIS office on Beach Road.

Feliciano said the celebration is about expressing appreciation to each other for the generosity they have extended to those who are in need.

They will also discuss an update on their struggle to obtain a lawful status in the CNMI under federal immigration law.

Another group will gather near the campsite for a “work stoppage” campaign from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Rabby Syed, United Workers Movement, said they do not encourage nonresident workers to leave their workplace, but they will not prevent those who do from gathering at the campsite.

Syed said they will continue to reach out to find ways to achieve their goal.

“We pray to God to help us get our lawful status after Nov. 27,” he said, adding his group will continue to ask Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan and U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to look into the plight of many nonresidents who will be displaced if not given a parole in place.

“We are encouraging everyone to join us. Those who may not be able to join can help pray for our cause,” he added.

On Saturday, organizer Sharmaine Casquero said they will stage “Showtime 2011”  that will feature “Saipan Divas” impersonating Lady Gaga, Madonna, Beyonce, Rihanna, and Gloria Gaynor.

The three-hour show will also feature FDC Dancers as well as other performers from the Bangladeshi, Chinese and other ethnic groups on island.

The show will be held at American Memorial Park at 7 p.m. on Nov. 26.

Casquero said the show is a fund-raising event which aims to assist nonresident workers to pay for their lawyers.

Each ticket is sold at $5.
