FY 2012 budget bill raises lawmakers’ pay

Expected to be passed without debate on Friday, the $102 million budget bill is scheduled to be pre-filed today.

The FY 2011 budget amount was $132 million.

The new budget bill reduces the discretionary funds of each lawmaker but raises their salaries. It also retained the House leadership account which will still be $138,000 while reducing that of the Senate to $110,396.

From $954,597 last fiscal year, the amount allotted for the salaries of 20 House members for FY 2012 will be $986,037.

The nine senators, who received $431,141 for their salaries last year, will get $441,359 in the next fiscal year, which starts on Oct. 1.

The only legislative budget item that was reduced was the members’ discretionary funds, which some lawmakers say will result in job cuts and limited community services to their constituents.

From $1.7 million in FY 2011, the discretionary fund allocation for  House members will be down to $1,031,519 in FY 2012.

From $765,000 in FY 2011, the senators will get $464,183 in FY 2012.

The Legislative Bureau’s budget will be down from $1.4 million to get $1.3 million while the Youth Congress which received $41,167 last year will get $12,962 in FY 2012.

The Public School System. which had $31 million in FY 2011, will get $27 million, while the Board of Education, which received $164,328, will  be allotted $175,393.

Northern Marianas College, which had $4.4 million last year, will get $4 million while the Marianas Visitors Authority, which had $2.6 million, will receive $5 million.
