Letter to the Editor: Hello to Tinian from Wendover, Utah

Today was the final hammer stroke to close the war in the pacific.  In Late 1944 the 509th Composite Group arrived in Wendover, Utah to train for the deployment of atomic weapons.  After many months of training they left and flew to North Field on Tinian to help bring an end to the Second World War.

This morning as the sun rises into the pale blue sky here on the salt flats of Utah I cannot help but think of how so many years ago those brave young men took off to serve our country and bring a speedy end to the conflict.  Many of the veterans speak fondly of their time there on Tinian despite the circumstances of war.  I think of the beautiful sunrises I witnessed there on Tinian and the two places seem to reach out to each other.

It was wonderful to be there on Tinian a year ago, to meet the wonderful people of the CNMI and watch the incredible sunrise at Tachogna beach and walk quietly through the jungle around North Field.  I am thankful that here in Wendover and there on Tinian there is no thunderous roar of bombers taking off and returning — only the quiet peace of remembrance and commemoration.

From Wendover to Tinian, all the best and Hafa Dai!
