“Thank you for participating in this year’s 113th Philippines Independence Day golf Tournament and congratulations to all of the winners,” said Fil-Taga Golf Association’s President Ted Malaran.
“More-over I would also like to thank the Saipan Golfer’s Association for their support. I big thank you to the former Judge Edward Manibusan for helping us complete this year’s tournament,” Malaran added.
Philippine Consul General Medardo Macaraig graced the tournament’s banquet/awards ceremony at the Aqua Resort as the Keynote speaker of the night.
“Congratulations to the Philippines Independence Day Golf Tournament. Earlier this morning we had our flag raising and it was a very solemn and serious affair but I hope with the theme that Mike [Cruz] has put on for us that it may be relatively easier for all of us now,” said Macaraig.
The golf tournament did not have separate flights but had one big tournament instead. Kim nailed 33 in the front holes and 40 in the back holes grossing a total of 73 netting a 71.8 overall.
“I sailed through the front holes quite easily but when I got to the back it got tougher. The par 4’s were harder this time around compared to the par 3’s at the HANMI tournament,” Kim said.
Variety learned that Kim suffered five bogeys on holes no. 10, 12, 15, 16, and 18 while garnering a birdie on hole no. 14 and a par on holes no. 11 and 17.
When asked when she would be leaving for Colorado Kim said that she would be leaving the second week of August. “I’ll be competing in every golf competition here on Saipan until I leave so it will be good practice for me,” Kim added. Kim went home with a handsome trophy and $700 in cash.
Refaluwasch Golf Association’s Carl Hocog placed second after totaling 38 in the front holes and 42 in the back to gross a total of 80 and then a net of 72.8. Hocog received a trophy and $500 in cash.
Hocog collared an eagle on hole no. 1 and two birdies on holes no. 3 and 5. Hocog faltered on holes no. 2 and 4 while getting a double bogey on holes no. 6 and 8.
Former Judge Edward Manibusan was in third place nailing a par in the front holes to total 36, 43 in the back holes and netted an overall 73. He received a trophy and $300 in cash.
“I had a lot of fun today during the golf competition. Everything went well and I really enjoyed it,” he said.
The Nearest to The Pin award was given to Mike Cruz on hole no. 3, Eun Jung Teack for hole no. 7, Leina Kim for hole no. 12 and George Taguchi on hole no. 14.
Other competitors included Xclusive Golf Association’s JJ Atalig (73.2), Manny Alvarez (73.4), George Taguchi (73.4), and Adony Matutino (73.6).
Alvarez and Taguchi shared the prize for 5th place after netting the same score. Fourth and fifth place received $200 and $100 but since there was a tie for fourth place the prize was split in half. Holes chosen to calculate the handicaps were no. 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16, and 18.
