This is the fourth year a ceremony was held at the area, which is located just off of Route 1 in the northern village.
Among those who attended was Sen. Frank Blas Jr., who said he’s never missed a ceremony.
“It always touches me with a tear when they light the memorial honoring the 45 individuals who perished there,” he said.
Also present was Japanese Consul General Yoshiyuki Kimura, who placed a wreath at the base of a white cross and in front of 45 candles each marked with a black cross.
Students from Simon Sanchez High School’s JROTC unit placed a U.S. flag and a Guam flag in posts of vases made of bamboo placed at the site to mark the individuals who died.
“These individuals were taken from their families to carry supplies and munitions up to Yigo,” he said. “In order for the Japanese hiding places not to be found by the Americans or fearing the Chamorros would help the Americans, the Japanese beheaded them.”
During the ceremony, a gun salute was also conducted by officers of the Guam Police Department.
