Hart wants a more aggressive approach in monitoring NMC legislation

“The purpose…is to better place us in a more proactive rather than reactive mode,” Hart said in her first meeting with the NMC board of regents yesterday.

She told the regents that they can gather information and discuss it internally.

Earlier, the CNMI Legislature passed House Bill 17-93 which aims for an improved financial oversight of  NMC.

Acting Gov. Eloy Inos signed the bill into law last week despite the strong opposition of NMC which believed it would affect its autonomy.

Hart noted that the board is scheduled to meet with lawmakers to provide them with updates regarding the college.

To better inform the Board, she said the college administration each month will submit a report.

“This will help you to better understand what is going on within the institution and it will allow us to showcase certain [issues],” she said.

Hart stressed the importance of keeping other key stakeholders “linked” to the board, especially the community leaders and the NMC Foundation.

She said the board may be interested in also meeting with these stakeholders.

During the board meeting, Hart also mentioned austerity Friday which was supposed to take effect today.

She said they need to revise the planned eight-hour work reduction for NMC.

Hart said the proposed changes will be presented during the next meeting of the college council which serves as the primary advisory body to the NMC president.

She recognized the efforts of former interim president Lorraine Cabrera for providing leadership during the past year and a half.
