Regents discuss allowing honorary members to attend closed-door sessions

Regent Andrew Orsini yesterday said there’s a need to further discuss the issue.

“We should draw a line on certain issues and topics about which honorary members can be allowed to participate,” he said.

Orsini said he has no position yet on the issue and he still wants to know what happened in the past when honorary members were allowed to attend  closed-door meetings and why they are no longer allowed to do so.

In the recent special meeting, Board Chairman Juan T. Lizama said honorary members should join executive sessions.

But regents Elaine Orilla and Frank Rabauliman disagreed.

The current honorary members are student regent Antonio Tiples, IV, faculty regent Larry Lee and staff regent Clarice D. Arriola.

They are non-voting members of the board.

Regent William S. Torres said he would welcome the honorary members’ “participation, insights, input and feedback.”

But he said honorary members should also maintain confidentiality and observe individual privacy requirements imposed upon the regents.

Like regents, he added, honorary members should also be subject to liability for unauthorized disclosure of private and confidential information.
