Residents who declined to be identified said they visited the beach near Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School right after Father’s Day and were met with a very “unpleasant sight.”
“It was so disgusting to see cans and bottles, plastic plates and all other forms of trash strewn all over the place by those who held a party at the beach the night before,” the resident said. Later, they saw GTC students and teachers picking up the trash on the beach.
“Anybody can hold a party at the beaches for free, but why can’t they clean up after their trash? Shame on them for leaving their trash and letting the little children pick up after them,” the residents added.
Sadly, they said, it was not the first time that partygoers left their trash behind.
“It happened several times in the past, and the children from GTC Elementary School always clean up after them. If no action will be done, it will happen again and again,” the residents said.
Knowing the challenges that the local tourism is facing, the residents said Saipan’s clean beaches are one of the island’s main attractions.
“Many tourists would not hesitate to pay much for a chance to visit our beaches, and this is all that we have but if we are not willing to take care of it, what will happen in the future?” the residents asked.
They are urging other members of the community to be responsible in cleaning after their own trash and not let the little children to clean up after them.
The staffers said that if everybody will be responsible for their own trash, regular cleanups will not be necessary anymore.
