PDM Promoters usually hold the regular cleanup every first or second Saturday of the month, but this month they extended the event to the third Saturday to join with other volunteers in the islandwide cleanup initiated by the Division on Environmental Quality.
Sonia Siwa of PDM Promoters said they turned over to DEQ all the trash that the team picked up in Garapan.
PDM Promoters usually collects 300 lbs of trash and more during each cleanup drive. Saturday’s participants included members of the Awaodori Team dancers from Tanapag, Gualo Rai and the Koblerville Community Center.
“A lot of parents also showed up to support the activity,” Siwa said.
Toshiko Sato, one of the regular tourists from Japan who visits Saipan about three to four times a year, always helps with the cleanup whenever she’s around.
“We are always happy to have Sato join us whenever she can. This goes to show that even tourists are picking up on what we have established as a monthly cleanup in the Garapan area,” Siwa said.
“Doing the actual cleaning and picking up of trash is also more effective than telling and lecturing about it to the kids,” Siwa said.
