NMI Humanities Council hosts annual junior high mock trial program

The event will feature five schools in four matches.

The program will feature the following pairings: (1) Whispering Palms vs. Mount Carmel School; (2) Dr. Rita Inos Jr. High School vs. Hopwood Jr. High School; (3) Hopwood Jr. High School vs. GCA (Rota); and (4) GCA (Rota) vs. Hopwood Jr.  High School.

Each participating mock trial team is headed by a teacher coach and has received periodic legal advice and guidance from a lawyer coach.

The program uses modified rules for junior high students and will feature a case that explores the religious clauses of the First Amendment. The same case was used in this year’s high school competition.

Former Rep. Joseph N. Camacho will serve as the trial judge. At the conclusion of the program, Camacho will recognize exceptional performances by student lawyers and witnesses.

The junior high mock trial program is held annually to help junior high school students develop useful knowledge about the law and courtroom procedures and to encourage an early interest in the high school competition.

This event is open and free to the public. For more information, contact Merced Ada at 235-4785/7 or visit the council website at www.nmihumanities.org.
