THE Public School System convened parents, educators, and literacy advocates from across the Northern Mariana Islands for its annual Parent Literacy Summit at Aqua Resort Club on April 25, 2024. The theme was “Literacy for All,” and the event drew about 75 parents representing 20 public schools across Saipan, Tinian, and Rota.
Dr. Judi Won Pat, a noted educator and former Guam legislator, was the keynote speaker. Delivering a compelling message on the power of literacy, Won Pat underscored the importance of parental involvement in children’s academic growth. “Literacy is not just about reading books — it’s about building the foundation for future learning and success,” she said, inspiring attendees with her insights on fostering literacy.
During the summit, attendees participated in breakout sessions and workshops. Topics covered included the importance of early literacy intervention, strategies for supporting English learners, and the value of maintaining and promoting bilingual language development both at home and in school.
In addition, practical math strategies were demonstrated, and parents learned about the Cooperative and Career and Technical Education programs, which are designed to boost student engagement and performance.
According to a parent from Tinian, “The summit gave us tools and insights that we can use every day to help our children. It was inspiring to be around others who care so deeply about education and literacy.”
Commissioner of Education Dr. Lawrence Camacho highlighted the importance of collaboration between parents and schools. “When parents and schools work together, students thrive. This summit is about building those connections and empowering families with knowledge,” he said.
The positive feedback from attendees underscored the success of the 2025 Parent Literacy Summit in strengthening the community’s shared commitment to advancing literacy in the CNMI.
Rizalina Liwag, PSS senior director of the Office of Curriculum and Instructional Services, expressed optimism about the future and the potential to expand the summit to reach even more families across the islands in the coming years.
