Motorists worried about new road’s small ‘flaw’

Upon coming to the exit passing a tire shop  along the San Vicente Loop, motorists said they can only exit northbound if they want to head south toward As Terlaje hill.

Upon exit of the loop, an island divides the road hindering drivers to achieve a safe exit into the southbound lane.

In addition, a “No U-Turn” sign was installed at the very end of the island to discourage such vehicular maneuvers.

Drivers interviewed by this reporter said the sign is a “flaw” because as they exit the San Vicente Loop, they often make a U-turn at the end of the island in order to get to the college or anywhere south.

A parent who drops her children off to school in San Vicente every morning said the No U-Turn sign makes her nervous.

She fears being pulled over for making an illegal turn.

The parent, who declined to be identified, works at Northern Marianas College and refuses to take the long way to work because of the rising gas prices so she makes the illegal turn every day.

She said there is constantly high traffic around the school every morning, adding that she witnesses numerous people making the U-Turn as well.

She said it makes no sense to put that sign at the end of the island because the people who exit from the loop will need to take a U-Turn there at some point during the day especially during rush hour.

She  wants to hear a simple explanation from the Department of Public Works about its plan for that stretch of highway and its advice on what drivers in her situation should do.

The Variety repeatedly tried but failed to get a comment from DPW on Friday.
