Miah appears in local court under federal custody

Judge Kenneth L. Govendo ordered Miah and Alam Bhuiyan to return to court for their next hearing on April 13, 2011.

Bhuiyan and Miah, who was in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, appeared in  local court last week.

Miah has a pending case in federal court, together with four co-defendants, for conspiracy and unlawful transfer of a CNMI driver’s license.

Miah and Bhuiyan were charged with theft by deception, and conspiracy to commit theft in local court.

Miah has other pending cases in the local court which have been consolidated under one trial judge for adjudication.

Miah is to change his not guilty plea in the local court, according to court documents.

Early this month, a visiting federal court judge placed Miah under house arrest once he posted a $5,000 personal security bond, and the installation of an electronic monitoring system at his residence was completed.

Miah had been under federal custody since Dec. 12, 2010.
