Rota’s Calvo wins Agricultural Fair perpetual trophy

Calvo also won the perpetual trophy, an award which will be passed on to another winner if he fails to maintain the title in the next agricultural fair.

The island’s best fruit, vegetables and crops were displayed for the judges and the crowd to see throughout the fair.

Rota Mayor Melchor A. Mendiola encouraged local farmers to continue mastering their craft to come up with  more crops and livestock.

Rota Department of Land and Natural Resources Resident Director Nicolas Songsong said  farmers play a big role in the economy of the island.

“Farmers, remember that everything we eat comes from the farm. Without the farmers, the world will go hungry,” Songsong said.

Northern Marianas College- Cooperative Research and Extension Education Services director Ross Hugh Manglona stressed the importance of the role farmers play toward economic development.

Manglona urged farmers to get updated on the latest technology and to further enhance their knowledge by attending workshops and training, and by learning from each other.

Other winners in the plant division were Fermin Atalig, Maria Fujihira, Mary Grace Songsong, Francisco Calvo, Dolores A. Mendiola, Carleen Atalig, Fedelia Mendiola, Abdul Rolf, Leo Calvo, Merlino Mora, and James Manglona.

Those who provided exhibits, displays and demonstrations included the Rota DLNR-Division of Fish & Wildlife, Soil & Water, Conservation, Parks & Recreation, Land Registry & Survey, Division of Agriculture Quarantine, Extension Services, Equipment Services And Forestry, NMC-CREES Programs including the 4H Club, Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program, Food Science/Value Added, Plant Protection, Crop Improvement, and Aquaculture & Livestock.
