Joke leads to machete attack

Noel Marcilino Dolde, 53, was arrested for attacking Carlos Vela with a machete.

Vela sustained a severe cut to his left arm which he used to parry the machete swung by Dolde at his head, police said.

Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth L. Govendo reduced to $15,000 cash the original $25,000 bail order.

Dolde is being held on charges of disturbing the peace, and assault with a dangerous weapon.

Govendo remanded Dolde to the custody of the Department of Corrections after his initial appearance and bail hearing yesterday morning.

Detective Catherine Pangelinan said prior to the machete attack, Vela was with his girlfriend outside his barracks drinking with his neighbor at about 11 p.m.

Dolde was playing cards next to their table but was not drinking with them, Pangelinan said.

“Mr. Vela said they were enjoying their time and joking around,” Pangelinan added.

When Dolde told a joke, the victim also told his own joke, which made Dolde  angry, Pangelinan said.

Dolde then got up from his seat and went to his room.

Few minutes later, Pangelinan said Dolde came out holding a machete.

Dolde walked toward Vela and swung the machete at the victim’s head, Pangelinan said.

Vela raised his left arm to block the machete, Pangelinan added.

Neighbors helped stop the fight and called the police.
