(Press Release) — Bradley Eichelberger, chairman of the Pacific GIS and Remote Sensing Council, said Pacific Island countries are facing increasingly greater challenges that need urgent attention.
The Pacific Islands GIS and Remote Sensing User Conference set for Nov. 24-27 at the University of the South Pacific in Suva, Fiji, will highlight many of these challenges, as well as examine potential solutions, as the region faces rising sea levels, increasing temperatures and increasingly extreme weather events.
“As many of the challenges we face in the Pacific are also impacting the rest of the world, the conference is attracting international participants,” said Eichelberger.
“We are delighted and honored that Professor Lena Halounova, president of ISPRS (the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing), will travel from Prague, Czech Republic, to attend.
“With a 20-year history linking our organizations, this is the first time that the sitting ISPRS President has attended the conference in person,” said Eichelberger.
PGRSC is an associate member of ISPRS, which is a scientific society that proposes GIS and remote sensing solutions all over the world. Halounova said she would like to strengthen relations between the Pacific Island experts and ISPRS experts.
“A target of my attendance is to understand what participants expect from ISPRS and how I can help them,” Halounova said. “This is the most valuable, informal knowledge exchange between people.”
