MANGILAO (UOG) — Youth ruled the Lady Triton Volleyball League this season, as Pacific Volleyball Academy captured the league title with a 3-2 victory over Guam Pro on Tuesday night at the UOG Calvo Field House.
Pacific Volleyball Academy and Guam Pro were the two youngest teams in the league, though Guam Pro received a boost with head coach Oksana Chernyshova — an international professional veteran — suited up and playing in the match.
Pacific, however, countered with Lean Aromin, a junior from Academy of Our Lady of Guam, who has emerged as one of the league’s most feared hitters. Aromin led Pacific Volleyball Academy, which went on to win the Triton League title in its first season competing in the Lady Triton Volleyball League.
Pacific took the opening set, 25-21, with Chernyshova sitting out. Guam Pro responded by inserting Chernyshova into the lineup and won the second and third sets by identical 25-22 scores.
Pacific rallied in the fourth set, pulling away for a 25-18 win to force a decisive fifth set, with the match tied at two sets apiece.
The championship was decided in a 15-point fifth set. Guam Pro jumped out to an 8-5 lead at the side switch and extended the advantage to 10-8 before Pacific’s Alina Torres stepped to the service line. Torres then delivered seven consecutive points — several coming on aces — to lift Pacific to a 15-10 fifth-set victory and seal the 3-2 match win.
Pacific finished the season with a 5-3 overall record after entering the playoffs as the fourth seed with a 2-3 regular-season mark. The academy squad then won three straight playoff matches, defeating the Lady Bombers, the Rogues — the top seed and previously undefeated team — and Guam Pro to claim the title.
Guam Pro finished the season 4-4 after also posting a 2-3 regular-season record. The team advanced to the championship match with playoff wins over the Lady Tritons and Au Mana, the league’s four-time champions.
