LAYING anti-skid materials, also known as high-friction surfacing, the Department of Public Works, GPPC Inc. and Pacific Engineering Group & Services began applying the final layer on Beach Road on Monday.

DPW Secretary Ray N. Yumul said 200 feet of anti-skid asphalt was applied to a portion of Beach Road near the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium in Oleai.

He said the contractor, GPPC Inc., will commence the anti-skid road surfacing on the rest of the road as soon as the initial layer passes a quality test.

The test result will be out before the end of the week, Yumul said. By the end of December, the entire paving work on Beach Road, from Garapan to Chalan Piao, should be completed, provided there are no unforeseen weather conditions that could cause a delay.

The $19.7 million road improvement project started in February 2023 and was supposed to be completed in January 2024. However, in August 2023,  GPCC (not PEGS as earlier reported) requested for a revision of the target completion date to November 2024. DPW evaluated and approved the request.

“I continue to ask for the driving public’s patience during the coming holidays,” Yumul said. “Our contractor, GPPC, is working extra hours to get the roads paved, and I see good progress at this point in time, and I applaud the efforts from all involved.”

Yumul thanked DPW’s engineers and staff, the staff of GPPC and PEGS,  the construction manager, as well the project managers, “who are focused on getting the Beach Road project completed.”
