Shawna Babauta conducts the “What is a Nonprofit?” workshop at MANGO’s Gualo Rai office.
THE Marianas Alliance of Non-Government Organizations or MANGO conducted a “What is a Nonprofit?” workshop at its Gualo Rai office on Wednesday, June 26.
The workshop was intended for people interested in beginning a nonprofit organization and tying its mission to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, MANGO Communications and Membership Manager Shawna Babauta said.
In an interview, she said people may form a nonprofit organization “once you’ve identified there’s a gap in some kind of service or there’s a lack of service that should be available and [it’s] something that the government is not necessarily addressing.”
At MANGO, Babauta said she and the other staff members are able to assist with grants compliance, accounting and grants management, which can sometimes complicate the mission of a nonprofit.
“A lot of times dreamers come to us but they’re not necessarily admin savvy,” she said. “So we want to be that for them so they can focus on their projects and activities and be on the ground with the community, serving the [public] and really pushing their programs and activities.”
“We even help folks who just want to start up nonprofits,” she added. “We can help them with their corporate documents, guide them to the appropriate steps and make sure that they do it correctly the first time.”
