FORMER Saipan resident Mike Arciaga is making waves on the mainland U.S., winning three awards at the Panhandle Show Down in Pensacola, Florida on April 13.

Under the guidance of Dicky Feria, also a former Saipan resident and bodybuilder, Arciaga was able to wow the judges and spectators alike, winning first place in the Novice Class Physique, second place in the True Novice Class Physique, and second place in the Classic Physique Class C.

Asked if he was satisfied with his debut performance, Arciaga responded, “Absolutely. I believe wholeheartedly that I came in the best that I could. This was me and Dicky’s first show together so we’re just now figuring out my body and ready to try new protocols for the next prep.”

Preparing for his first bodybuilding competition was not an easy task, according to the 26-year-old full-time student at Pensacola State College and Maxfit Sports nutrition sales representative.

“It was challenging, both physically and mentally,” he added. “The amount of stress that you put your body through physically takes a lot of commitment, discipline and sacrifice. The psychological aspect of the sport might be even harder.”

Arciaga added, “I was drowning in self-doubt, hunger, and to top it off I’m a full-time college student.”

He said the cardio and the depletion days were the worst for him as he started his prep at a not so ideal fat percentage. He and his coach had to dig deep to get him fat-free and conditioned.

Despite the many obstacles, Arciaga said he was genuinely happy with the competition. “It was exciting and nerve-racking. I knew I did the best I could…so I can’t complain there,” he added.

Arciaga has nine weeks to prepare for his next show. “I’m feeling good, and my body is responding really well. I’m in a good state in terms of my body fat…. The goal is to come in much fuller, harder, conditioned with more emphasis on the chest.”

Arciaga aims to compete in the Maxfit Pro/Am Classic at the Fort Walton beach in Florida slated for Aug. 17.
