THE 670 Rollers emerged victorious in the exciting U16 title game of the Pokka Cup 2024 by outlasting Madflex, 76-70, at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium on Friday.
Both teams played their hearts out from the very beginning as they filled the opening quarter with several lead exchanges.
Madflex had a handful of scoring options with Jezpher Navarro firing the first seven points.
The 670 Rollers, for their part, moved the ball to find the easy shots inside with Marc Tengco, Kian Helgen, and Elijah Ye delivering the buckets as their team seized the lead.
But Navarro picked up where he left off with another series of makes for a total of 14 points to tie the score, 20-20.
More of the same was seen in the next 10 minutes.
While the 670 Rollers continued to thrive with teamwork, Madflex’s Christian Lucero scored six points and Navarro ignited the crowd with a buzzer-beater triple to grasp a slight advantage by halftime, 38-35.
Madflex continued to ride the momentum in the third period with Lucero still on the attack, pushing an eight-point spread.
However, the 670 Rollers’ never-give-up attitude allowed Heman Addy to connect crucial back-to-back shots before Madlfex started to create better shot opportunities to regain a two-possession lead, 58-54.
Despite Madflex’s strong performance, the 670 Rollers managed to stage a late-game rally. Addy caught on fire from beyond the arc, knocking down two triples while Ye added another to lead 72-70 with less than two minutes left on the clock.
Helgen missed both free-throw attempts, but he hustled back to get his own miss and connect the second-chance bucket to solidify his team’s lead.
Following another missed attempt by Madflex, Helgen delivered yet another bucket from the perimeter to seal the deal, 76-70.
