Health conference to discuss drug policy

HONIARA (Pacnews) — A health conference is underway in the Solomon Islands to discuss among other things a national drug policy.

The director of the National Pharmacy Service, Anna Chao, admits the country does not have a national drug policy.

An overview of malaria in Solomon Islands, drug resistance patterns and revised treatment guidelines also form part of the conference agenda.

A. Samoa politician favors US intervention

PAGO PAGO (Pacnews) — There has been a call in American Samoa for the U.S. government to be given jurisdiction over the territory on a case-by-case basis.

The call was made by Fagafaga Daniel Langkilde, who was a candidate in last year’s election for the U.S. Congress.

American Samoa is the only U.S. territory without a federal court, but courts in Hawaii or Washington hear cases of American Samoans charged with federal crimes.

Fagafaga said he favors federal intervention in territorial affairs if federal funds and laws are involved.

He said this would keep people honest and provide a good check and balance.

Morauta appeals for cooperation

MORESBY (Pacnews) — Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister Mekere Morauta has asked employers in Port Moresby, Lae and Mt. Hagen to cooperate with their employees on polling day and give them every encouragement to vote.

“These cities have one-day voting, on Monday, June 17, and it is important that all eligible citizens be given every opportunity to cast their vote,” he said.

“Experience tells us that voting can take considerable time. Therefore I ask employers to exercise tolerance and understanding on polling day,” Morauta said.

“Employees should feel confident that they will be able to vote and that they will not be penalized by their employers for any time of absence on election day,” Morauta said.
