Manhunt for escaped inmate continues

POLICE officers continued yesterday their search for escaped prisoner Steve R. Aguon.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Pete C. Muna said members of the 16-man Tactical Response Enforcement Team started looking for Aguon on Wednesday night.

Muna said the TRET team under the supervision of Police Sgt. Jack Salas and Police Capt. Manuel Mangarero scoured other areas where Aguon might be hiding.

Muna said investigation was still ongoing on how the prisoner managed to get away from his escort, a corrections officer, in Kannat Tabla.

The Internal Affairs Office is also involved in the investigation to determine any negligence on the part of DPS personnel, Muna said.

Aguon escaped from custody on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Public Safety Commissioner Edward Camacho, Aguon is considered dangerous and is possibly armed.

Camacho said Aguon was attending a family function at the time of his escape.

Sources said the prisoner was supposed to attend a funeral wake for a relative who died in a recent vehicular accident.

Last December, the Superior Court ordered Aguon to spend five years in jail without the possibility of parole for the killing of a garment worker.

Aguon pleaded guilty to the lesser included offense of voluntary manslaughter.

On Feb. 3, 2001, Welly Tosie of Rifu Garment Factory was killed by Aguon who struck him repeatedly with a baseball bat along a road in Kannat Tabla.

Aguon said he fought with Tosie in front of Bif Furniture and Tong Yang Carpet Store.
