Treasury Office burglarized

THE government’s Treasury Office on Capitol Hill was burglarized last week.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Pete C. Muna on Friday said papers were scattered on the floor, but no money or office equipment were reported stolen.

Muna said the break-in was discovered by Dolores C. Celis, an employee of the Treasury Office, when she went to work on Wednesday at 7:15 a.m.

Celis told the police that when she unlocked the front entrance door she noticed papers on the floor. Some drawers were also opened, she said.

Celis immediately went outside and asked her husband to accompany her “because she was scared.” The couple checked inside the office, but no one was there. Celis then reported the incident to the police.

Investigators found that the front entrance door had been forcibly opened. One of the offices in the building and several desk drawers were also pried open.

The door to the office that houses the vault and payroll checks was opened as well. Muna said the vault was not touched.

Police placed the case under further investigation.
