Babauta wants NMI included in Japan-US agreement

GOVERNOR Juan N. Babauta and Washington Rep. Pete A. Tenorio will be in Japan to witness the signing of the U.S.-Japan agreement on tourism and commerce expansion.

The governor wants to ensure that the CNMI will be identified specifically or generally in the agreement.

“We have to make sure that the commonwealth is recognized in the agreement,” Babauta told Variety yesterday.

“The agreement is for both countries to promote tourism on both sides. (What) we would like to encourage is for Japan to look at the CNMI as a vacation destination. And we are working very hard to make that (possible),” the governor said.

Though the CNMI is “generally mentioned” as an American territory in the April 19 memorandum of understanding between the U.S. and Japan, the June agreement “will make sure that the CNMI is included,” the governor said.
