Babauta to attend governors conference

“KEY and sensitive issues” will be discussed by members of the Western Governor’s Association during its three-day annual meeting on June 23-25.

In a letter to the members, Gov. Jane Dee Hull of Arizona, who is the association chairwoman, said President Bush and other members of his Cabinet are among those invited to join the meeting.

Special Assistant for Federal Policy and Research Sonya Artero told Variety yesterday that Gov. Juan N. Babauta will attend the meeting in Phoenix, Arizona.

She said it will give the governor an opportunity to articulate CNMI concerns.

In her letter, Hull said one of WGA’s priorities is the development of an effective energy policy not just within the western region, but including its neighbors in the north and south.

WGA will push for a “set of recommendations” for building a North American Energy Coalition with particular emphasis on Mexico.

Issues concerning “cross-border energy trade and investment” will be tackled, together with future steps to create a “robust continental energy market.”

Hull said the topic of electricity transmission will be discussed “in-depth.” Another important topic that will be discussed is the improvement of homeland security with the use of “new and emerging” technologies.
