SSHS wins PSS outrigger titles; boys record perfect score

The Saipan Southern High School boys team completes a turn during a 1000m race in the co-ed high school division of the PSS Interscholastic Outrigger Race Series SY23-24 at Kilili Beach.

SAIPAN Southern High School swept all three divisions — men’s, women’s, and mixed — of the PSS Interscholastic Outrigger Race Series SY23-24 at Kilili Beach on Saturday.

The SSHS boys shined the brightest as they dominated the 500m and 1000m events.

In the preliminary round of the 500m, SSHS paddled their way through the one-lap race by finishing eight seconds ahead of the competition with a time of 02:47.440. Kagman High School placed second at 02:55.630 while Marianas High School came in third at 02:58.470.

In the final round, SSHS finished first again with a time of 02:47.980 while KHS improved their time by a second, clocking at 02:54.630. MHS was right behind at 03:05.110.

In the preliminary round of the 1000m event SSHS finished first with a time of 06:06.340 followed by KHS at 06:13.070, and MHS at 06:18.960.

SSHS improved its speed in the final round, crossing the finish line at 05:56.960 while KHS came in second at 06:03.240. MHS was disqualified after knocking down their flags during the first and third turns.

Throughout the series, the SSHS boys team performed flawlessly acquiring a perfect score of 85 points to claim the championship. KHS placed second with 43 points while MHS finished third with 22.

The SSHS boys team consists of Tyler Andrew, Phillip Aldan, Yuling Chai, Endymion San Nicolas, Florencio Nekai, Matthew Peters, Drauzen Jicko, Techeltoech Cameron Yaoch, Santrez Damarlane, Caleb Sablan, Devin Camacho and Trever Reyes.

Girls division

In the preliminary round of the girls’ 500m race, MHS clinched first place with a time of 03:17.340 followed by KHS  at 03:23.940 and SSHS at 03:25.380.

In the final round, SSHS turned the tides and steered their way to victory at 03:08.290, beating MHS who clocked 03:16.860 and KHS whose finish time was 03:37.310.

In the 1000m distance, SSHS topped the preliminary and final rounds.

SSHS powered through the preliminary round with a time of 06:43.860 followed by MHS at 06:50.040 and KHS  at 07:18.560.

SSHS bagged their second win in the final round with a time of 06:53.470 while KHS moved up to second place at 07:35.060 after MHS suffered a disqualification by knocking down a flag during their second turn.

The SSHS girls team won the title with 73 points while MHS settled for second place with 51. KHS was third with 26.

Mixed division

In the preliminary division of the mixed division, SSHS topped the 500m distance with a time of 02:55.550 while MHS took second place at 02:58.960. KHS came in third with a time of 03:11.780.

In the final round, SSHS finished first again with a time of 02:55.590 followed by MHS at 02:57.560 and KHS  at 03:11.870.

In the preliminary round of the 1000m race, SSHS came in first with a time of 06:10.210 followed by MHS at 06:21.250. KHS suffered a technical disqualification for having four boys and two girls on their team.

In the final round, MHS took the helm with a time of 06:25.650 while SSHS came in second at 06:33.490. KHS finished third at 06:40.650.

Overall, SSHS still stood tall in first place with a total of 65 points followed by MHS with 54, and KHS with 22.
