Trial set for Wednesday in Sånta Rita-Sumai homicide

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — A man accused in a Sånta Rita-Sumai homicide case is scheduled to go to trial Wednesday.

Jamie John Nededog was indicted on charges of murder in connection to the death of 54-year-old Edwin Babauta Pirando, along with other charges of theft of a motor vehicle as a second-degree felony, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle as a misdemeanor and attempted destruction of evidence.

According to Post files, Nededog has since pleaded not guilty to the charges and asserted his right to speedy trial.

Nededog’s attorney, Peter Santos from the Alternate Public Defender, confirmed with The Guam Daily Post that Nededog’s trial will start Wednesday.

Additionally, when asked about negotiations with the Office of the Attorney General, Santos said Nededog will not accept any offers. Santos said the AG’s office sent an offer for Nededog to plead guilty to manslaughter.

Investigation

On Oct. 15, 2023, Guam Police Department officers reported they found the lifeless body of a 54-year-old man, later identified as Pirando, near the Atantano Shrine in Sånta Rita-Sumai with several injuries to his face consistent with blunt-force trauma.

The GPD Criminal Investigation Division was then activated and started an investigation, while Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Jeffrey Nine conducted an on-scene assessment.

During the investigation, police identified Nededog as a suspect after they learned Pirando was driving a dark gray 2012 Toyota pickup and a witness told officers Nededog had spoken about a pickup with blood inside it.

The truck was later found parked by the area of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church and school.

Nededog subsequently was arrested on suspicion of murder, reckless conduct, theft of property, use of a deadly weapon in the commission of a felony, disinterring a corpse, destroying evidence, theft of a motor vehicle and aggravated assault.

However, after being booked and confined at the Department of Corrections days after Pirando’s body was found, he was not charged in the Superior Court of Guam, which meant Nededog was released.

At the time, Attorney General Douglas Moylan told the Post that after reviewing the information provided by police, prosecutors chose not to file charges.

On Dec. 1, 2023, the case was brought before a grand jury, which produced a true bill in finding probable cause to charge Nededog.
