Bad weather threatens Asia Pacific baseball tournament

 

Regional Baseball Tournament except one: The weather.

Tournament director, Mike Borja said they have been in constant communication with the National Weather Services in Tiyan, Guam in closely monitoring the weather in the next few days particularly on Saturday when the regional tournament will open at the Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field.

He said they are working closely with KSPN’s Bob Coldeen who is involved in the committee, to keep in touch with the weather watch agency while keeping their fingers crossed to have a good weather in the opening ceremony.

He said nobody wants the opening game to be rained out.

Saipan has been having rains since over the weekend and yesterday, heavy downpour interrupted the job of volunteers and Parks and Recreation personnel who were grooming the baseball diamond the field.  

The NWS forecast scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms on Saipan in the morning today, and will have 10 to 15 KT wind and three to four feet waves through out Saturday.

The organizing committee hasn’t decided yet what to do in case the bad weather continues this weekend. At this time, things are expected to move ahead as scheduled.

As for the NMI’s Little League All Stars, Borja assured they are all prepared to confront the off-island teams.  

The All Star teams from Jakarta, Indonesia are set to arrive at 1:30 this morning, while the Philippine Little League All Stars are expected to be on island by 5:30 p.m. this afternoon.

Guam All Stars will be arriving in two groups tomorrow, on June 26. The first group will be coming at 7:50 a.m., and the second group, at 8:50 a.m.

The Little League All Stars from Hongkong will be the last teams to arrive. They will be here in the morning of June 28 when a technical meeting will be held at 11 a.m., then, the opening ceremony at 1 p.m., and the opening game between CNMI and Guam in Big League division at 3 p.m.

Competing in the Junior League are All Star teams from CNMI, Indonesia, Guam, Philippines and Hongkong.

In the Senior and Big Leagues are CNMI, Guam and Philippines. CNMI is the defending champion.
