12 Rota High School students fail math

Lynne Michael said the Board of Education, which decided to retain her after reviewing the petition,  told her that it wants to see improvements in the mathematical skills of Rota students.

She said they addressed this concern by introducing a new federally funded system in the fourth quarter for the Algebra 1 and Geometry classes.

Students took placement tests that helped teachers evaluate the children’s mathematical skills.

Michael said the new system will be used in all math classes in the new school year.

Rota High School has two math teachers.

Progress was seen in the mathematical skills of students when the system was implemented at  Hopwood, Chacha, and Kagman High Schools, and Michael expects to see the same development on her campus.

She admitted that many students on Rota had trouble passing Algebra 2 and Geometry.

To help these students, Michael said they provided after-school tutorials.

“The main concern of the parents is our math because we have several students who are failing the subject,” she said. “They find solving math problems difficult and we need to improve their skills.”

Michael at the same time commended the school’s two math teachers for doing a great job with the new system.

Starting in 2009, the new graduation requirement for all public high school students is to pass Algebra 2.

Michael said the school understands the importance of providing students with higher and advance math  classes so they can fulfill this graduation requirement.
