GOP treasurer resigns over Tenorio’s monument stand

Villagomez is among the leaders of a group of indigenous people against the proposal whose main proponent is the Pew Environmental Group.

He said he resigned from the GOP because its candidate for the U.S. Congress, Tenorio, refused to sign  the petition against the Pew proposal.

Tenorio has said that he cannot in his “good and clear conscience sign a petition that permanently closes the door on a cooperative venture that will promote conservation and economic development in joint cooperation with our federal government.”

Villagomez said their group will come up with a “massive campaign” against Pew’s proposal in the coming days.

Both the Legislature and the Fitial administration have already asked the Bush administration not to approve Pew’s proposal, citing economic and cultural concerns over access to the three islands which cover 115,000 square miles.

Pew has scheduled to hold another public presentation this month regarding its proposal.
