Tourist nearly drowns at Managaha

Ogumoro said DPS received the report of possible drowning incident on Thursday after a boat carrying the victim arrived at the Smiling Cove Marina.

Based on  preliminary investigation, Yoshijima and two family members were swimming in the waters at the northern end of Managaha when one of the victim’s companions saw him floating motionless with face down on the water.

Yoshijima’s relative started yelling for help and another Japanese man assisted in pulling the victim out of the water and onto the shore. The victim was observed to be breathing heavily.

Leo Wania, a lifeguard on duty who was on the southern end of the island at that time, was immediately notified.

Wania assisted in placing Yoshijuma in a recovery position until he was transported to t Smiling Cove Marina where medics were already  waiting.

Yoshijima was brought to the Commonwealth Health Center for further treatment and observation.
