Associate Judge Kenneth L. Govendo ordered Chun Wook Yu to report to court whenever required to do so, keep all appointments with his attorney, and report for arraignment of his case on July 7 at 9 a.m.
The preliminary hearing is set for June 30.
The court also ordered the confiscation of Yu’s travel documents.
In an affidavit submitted to the court, Detective Abraham Villagomez stated that a security guard from Joeten Hafa Adai Shopping Center in Garapan reported a shoplifting case on June 15.
The affidavit stated that security personnel monitored the defendant through surveillance cameras entering the store and making his way to the clothing section.
Yu was seen taking three brand-name button shirts from the display and going into the fitting room. After a few minutes, Yu returned two of the three shirts he took.
The affidavit stated that Yu, who was carrying a black backpack, was seen making his way to the liquor section and taking two bottles of 21-year-old Ballantine Whiskey which he placed in his backpack.
Yu then proceeded to the Athlete’s Foot section but when he noticed that he was being monitored by the security guards, he headed to the market area.
He was apprehended by security personnel upon exiting the store.
When Yu was ordered to empty his backpack, a Roscoe-brand button shirt and two bottles of Ballantine Whiskey were discovered — the items were worth $139.92.
Upon investigation, Yu waived his rights to counsel and admitted to stealing the whiskey and the button shirt. He also admitted it was not the first time he stole from the store.
Security personnel at the store told authorities that Yu had stolen wine from the store two times but had gotten away.
Further investigation showed that Yu stole merchandise worth $669.72 on three occasions.
