Machete-wielding man arrested at Bank of Guam

RESPONDING Department of Public Safety police officers arrested Patrick Gibo at the front entrance of the Bank of Guam in Garapan for causing a disturbance Thursday morning.

According to DPS, 911 police dispatch received a call about a disturbance at the bank.

A witness reported that a man wielding a machete was screaming outside the bank’s main entrance.

DPS said bank employees “attempted to assist the man but decided to wait for responding officers.”

At about 9:45 a.m., police officers arrived on the scene, and one of them “noticed a male subject standing outside [the bank] with a machete on the ground beside him.”

DPS said when “the subject attempted to pick up the machete…the officer immediately directed him to drop it and step away.”

When the man “tried to reach for the machete again…the officer advised him to step away,” DPS added.

In the man’s third attempt to pick up the weapon, “the officer managed to stop the subject from picking it up and was then assisted by other officers in restraining” the man, DPS said.

DPS identified him as 44-year-old Patrick T. Gibo of Kagman II.

He was subsequently brought to the Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation where he was admitted for evaluation.

Witnesses said Gibo was at the bank when he got into an argument with a bank staffer. Gibo left and then returned with a machete. But according to DPS, there was no argument, and bank staff “were trying to assist him, but [they] stepped back because he had a machete.”
