Why it’s important to spay or neuter pets

THE Saipan Humane Society, which is conducting a pet clinic at the mayor’s animal shelter in As Perdido, is urging pet owners to bring their dogs or cats to be spayed or neutered.

According to the non-profit group, “animal overpopulation is the #1 cause of animal suffering in the Marianas.”

A Brown University article said spaying and neutering a dog or a cat is beneficial to its health.

“Spayed and neutered pets are better, more affectionate, companions. Neutered cats are less likely to spray and mark territory,” the article stated.

It added that spaying a female dog or cat eliminates its heat cycle, which can last 21 days, twice a year, in dogs, and anywhere from three to 15 days, three or more times a year, in cats.

“Spayed and neutered pets are less likely to bite. Unaltered animals often exhibit more behavior and temperament problems than those that have been spayed or neutered,” the article stated.

Here are more reasons why you should spay or neuter your dog or cat:

• Spayed and neutered dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives.

• Spaying female dogs and cats eliminates the possibility of uterine or ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the incidence of breast cancer.

• Neutering male dogs and cats reduces the incidence of prostate cancer.

• Neutered animals are less likely to roam and fight.

The SHS pet clinic hours are from 12 noon to 4 p.m. The clinic is open from Tuesday to Friday.

To maintain fairness and equal opportunity for all pet owners, SHS said it is following a first-come, first-serve policy.

“We kindly request that you arrive at the clinic during our operating hours to secure a spot in the queue. Our staff will assist you promptly upon arrival,” SHS stated.

“In order to ensure that all pets receive the attention they require, we will have a cut-off time for new arrivals. Our team will be unable to accommodate any new patients after 3 p.m. This allows us sufficient time to provide quality care to those already waiting,” SHS added.
