CHINESE-TAIPEI (Taiwan) won the women’s double and men’s single titles Sunday in the Crowne Plaza Northern Marianas Open 2023 at the Ada gym.
In the women’s double, Hsu Ya Ching and Lin Wan Ching defeated Lee Yu Lim and Shin Seung Chan of South Korea 21-19, 18-21, 22-20 while Liao Jhou-Fu bested South Korea’s Jeon Hyeok Jin, 21-15, 21-14, in the men’s single.
The Chinese-Taipei pair excelled in game 1 of the women’s double title match thanks mostly to their aggressive pace, but their South Korean opponents also played well.
However, in the end, Hsu Ya Ching and Lin Wan Ching clinched the first game of the match, 21-19.
The South Korea duo retaliated in the second game with power smashes and soft touches near the net to equalize the match, 21-18, and force a third and final game.
In the third game, the Chinese-Taipei pair led throughout most of the exchanges, but their South Korea opponents staged a comeback to the tie the score, 20-20. However, they lost their touch as the Chinese-Taipei duo bounced back with two consecutive points to secure the win, 22-20.
Hsu Ya Ching and Lin Wan Ching said they’re now looking forward to competing in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Men’s singles title
Earning another title for Chinese-Taipei was Liao Jhou-Fu who outlasted South Korea’s Jeon Hyeok Jin, 21-15, 21-14.
Liao Jhou-Fu played aggressively from start to finish. After he and his opponent reached 10 points, he established control with swift returns, forcing Jeon Hyeok Jin to commit errors, which allowed Liao Jhou-Fu to score five consecutive points to win the first game, 21-15.
In the second game, Jeon Hyeok Jin worked on his strength which was the soft touch near the net, throwing Liao Jhou-Fu’s momentum off course. However, the Chinese-Taipei player adjusted and scored six points in a row to regain the lead and secure the win and the title, 21-14.
Liao Jhou-Fu, 18, was ecstatic to win the event and he is also hoping to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games as well.
When asked which countries have the strongest players in the upcoming TakeCare Saipan International tournament, he answered, “Japan and South Korea.”
