NMI’s Lina Tsukagoshi places third in regional tennis tourney

THE NMI’s Lina Tsukagoshi on Monday bagged third-place in the non-seeded entries of the Girls Singles 14 event at the 2023 Pacific Oceania Junior Championships in Lautoka, Fiji.

In the semifinals, Tsukagoshi fell to Vanuatu’s Alisha Kanegai, 4-6, 2-3.

However, she still had a chance to vie for third place against Guam’s Leah San Agustin, who lost her semifinal match against the Solomon Islands’ Maelyn Bird, 3-6, 4-6.

In their match, Tsukagoshi  routed San Agustin in the first set, 6-1. The Guamanian picked up the pace in the second set by winning three games, but was again outplayed by Tsukagochi and had to eventually accept defeat, 3-6.

Tsukagoshi will also vie for fifth place in the Girls Doubles 14 event with her teammate Anne Lee after they lost in the quarterfinals to Vanuatu’s Alisha Kanegai and Ashanti Ligo, 3-6, 2-6.

Tsukogoshi and Lee will be going head-to-head against Fiji’s Alexandria Chand and Clara Ueki today, Tuesday.

The NMI’s June Yu, for his part, clinched fifth place in the Boys Singles 16 after defeating his team mate Simon Tang, 6-2, 6-1.
